Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) Practice Test

Using silt fences to prevent sediment runoff is a widely recognized best management practice (BMP) included in a Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP). Silt fences are specifically designed to control sedimentation by trapping sediment that is disturbed during construction activities. They act as a barrier that allows water to flow through while retaining soil particles, thereby reducing the amount of sediment that can be carried away by stormwater. This is crucial for protecting nearby water bodies and maintaining water quality, as excessive sediment can lead to issues like habitat degradation and increased pollutant loading.

In contrast, clear-cutting vegetation around the site can lead to increases in erosion and runoff, negating the protective benefits of vegetation. The installation of drainage ditches away from the site might help redirect water, but it doesn’t specifically address sediment control associated with runoff. The application of herbicides can control weeds, but it does not serve a purpose in preventing sediment from contaminating water during rain events, and it could introduce additional pollutants into the environment. Thus, the use of silt fences aligns best with the goals of a SWPPP to minimize stormwater pollution.
